Every threat or mention of self-harm should be treated seriously, regardless of how casual or indirect it may seem. Early intervention can save lives and provide the individual with the support they need during a crisis.

Warning signs include talking about feeling hopeless, withdrawing from friends and family, sudden mood changes, giving away personal belongings, expressing feelings of being a burden, or discussing death frequently.

Remain calm, listen without judgment, express concern, and encourage the person to seek professional help. If there is an immediate risk, contact emergency services or the appropriate crisis support resources immediately.

Avoid dismissive comments such as “You’ll get over it,” “Others have it worse,” or “You don’t mean that.” These responses can make the person feel misunderstood and less likely to seek help.
